What Do You Consider A Kitchen Essential?

The kitchen is one of the most used rooms in the home. It’s where you cook, eat and talk to your loved ones. But what would you consider to be an absolute essential when it comes to appliances?

Below we look at 5 appliances that many of us couldn’t live without…

Fridge/Freezer

This appliance tops our list quite easily, as it’s where we store all of our fresh food. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from under-counter fridges to giant American style double door fridges.

But there is one problem that we all have when it comes to our fridge, which is food waste. Despite being an ‘essential’ appliance, the average UK family wastes £470 a year by throwing away food and drink which could have been eaten!

Luckily, BOSCH have teamed up with charity Hubbub to tackle food waste across the UK with “Community Fridges”. With 38 fridges across the UK where surplus food can be dropped off and shared between individuals and local businesses within a community.

Oven/Cooker

If there’s one thing that goes hand in hand with fridges, it’s ovens. In 2017, NEFF has over 2.4 million users using their cookers!

They’re used by most households and they too come in a variety of shapes and sizes. From small wall mounted ovens to large double ovens.

Additionally, as ovens are now usually integrated, many households have them as standard in 2019. This makes them even more of an essential in the kitchen.

Washer/Dryer

Did you know that 98% of households in the UK now own a washing machine? Much more than the 65% in 1970!

This isn’t a surprise, with the alternative being a local laundrette (of which there are not that many left). They are used almost daily by families across the UK, especially those with young children.

Having wet clothes dry quicker is also important for many. Tumble dryers are now used by 58% of households, an increase of 8% from 1995.

Dishwasher

We now live in a world of convenience, and this has meant an increase in kitchen devices to help us better optimise our time.

Almost half of all UK households (49%) now own a dishwasher. In 1994 this was only 18%. That’s over double within just 25 years.

Although dishwashers can sometimes take longer than washing by hand, the convenience of pressing a button is just too tempting for most households to ignore.

Kettle/Coffee Machine

Last but not least we turn to a kitchen staple in the UK, the trusty kettle.

Unsurprisingly, we drink 165 million cups of tea a day which is enough to fill 20 swimming pools! The UK also drinks 95 million cups of coffee daily, with 65% of cups being drunk at home.

We also quite like hot drinks machines that can make coffee, tea and hot chocolate. With a variety of well known brands offering easy to make drinks at home.

From the initial discussions and call out with Denis, his particular eye for design came through and he made some great suggestions for opening up the space in terms of removing the chimney breast and partitioning out existing pantry which have transformed our kitchen area. Denis was there every step of the way, coming in an checking on the trades, liaising with them while we weren't in the property and project managing it to a very high standard.

The entire experience from the initial design through to completion was excellent. It was so reassuring having Denis managing the project. He'd stop in most days to make sure everything was on track and up to his high standards and to deal with any small issues that cropped up. All of the contractors they worked with were also excellent. The entire project ran smoothly and on time. And the finished room is beautiful! Just what we wanted.
